Timeless Design since the 19th century
Why not try Bordalo Pinheiro as your new table setting this Christmas?
Bordalo Pinheiro, a big name that most Portuguese know. If the name doesn’t ring a bell the images might do.
Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, born in 1846, changed forever the meaning of poetry and ceramics. He had dedicated his life to humorist drawing, caricature and ceramic creation. Since 1887, when Bordalo Pinheiro founded the ceramics factory at Caldas da Rainha, the meaning of detail, intangible heritage has changed forever in the ceramic world.
These pieces are so special that you don’t really need to know their history, they speak for themselves.
As a designer and greedy for novelty, I am looking for new, exiting or inspiring bits and pieces, but it’s wonderful when something contradicts you. It seams that when we want to buy something new we usually are drawn to pieces that feel that are new and fresh, that we think we never seen before, unique, that not everyone has. Well, at least this is my brain’s involuntary process. But these are works of art that no matter how many times we have seen them or how many we have, they are still eternal, beautiful, special. What I would call true timeless design.
Portuguese people tend to consider them too traditional and maybe old fashioned but i think they are just perfect overly detailed, and over the top pieces to add to a modern, clean house.
The old pieces and the new design always fascinate me. See it for yourself. I have made my selection bellow.
